When it comes to table tennis, the best strategy that you can employ is to keep the ball in play for a long time than your opponent. By being consistent, you are forcing your opponent to make errors and thus score default points. Now, the only way you can be consistent is if you practice on a daily basis. Following are some basic table tennis practice drills.

Backhand both ways

In this drill, both the players will be using their backhand stroke, across the court. The table tennis ball has to be returned to the backhand corner only. You can start by push (backhand) and then move onto the drive (backhand).

Forehand both ways

Both the players can switch sides and then play forehand both ways, across the court. The table tennis ball has to be returned to the forehand corner only. You can start by push (forehand) and then move onto the drive (forehand).

Back to Fore

In this drill, you will be using only back strokes, and your opponent will be using forehand strokes. The position of both the players will be down the line. You and your opponent both can start with a push stroke, and then you can move onto a back drive and your opponent a forehand block.

Fore to Back

In this drill, you will be using only front strokes, and your opponent will be using back strokes. The position of both the players will be down the line. You and your opponent both can start with a push stroke, and then you can move onto a front drive and your opponent a backhand block.

Playing the strokes

The back and fore push – Stand near to the table tennis table, position yourself facing the view/line of play, and hit the ball with a short stroke when the ball is at its highest position. Move your racket-arm from the elbow horizontally.

The back and fore drive – Stand near to the table, and position yourself facing the view/line of play. Hit the ball with a medium stroke when the ball is at its highest position. Rotate your body (45 degrees approximately) while you take the shot. You will be able to become an expert player if you practice your drills on a regular basis.
